Damien's journey involves embracing and learning more about his heritage with the goal of inspiring future generations.
Indigenous Studies student, Damien Kakewash, Minegoziibe Anishinabe (Pine Creek First Nation)
Damien Kakewash鈥檚 friends recommended Camosun to begin his post-high school journey. 鈥淭hey said it's a good place to start,鈥 says Damien. 鈥淢y high school support worker and Indigenous Education Assistant recommended the Indigenous Studies program because of my heritage and involvement with the community.鈥 He had just graduated high school and taking the leap into post-secondary was intimidating and he felt out of place. 鈥淏ut my classmates started interacting with me and I became part of the group. They treated me like an adult,鈥 says Damien.
He has become more aware of his Indigenous heritage and is embracing it. 鈥淢y Indigenous heritage has been strong throughout the years and a big part of that has to do with knowing and getting the opportunities to heal.鈥 When he graduates from the program, Damien is planning to pursue his goal of attending university to become a journalist. 鈥淚 want to give the Indigenous people a voice and inspire the future generations to speak out more.鈥
