Scheduling appointments
Can I drop in for help, or do I have to book an appointment?
It鈥檚 best to , but we occasionally have time to help students who drop by our offices.
Is there a limit to how many appointments I can make?
You can make one appointment per week, up to two weeks in advance. There is no limit to the number of weeks. These policies allow us to remain available to students across the college and ensure that students have time to make some progress on their own between sessions with us.
My assignment is due tonight. Can I still make an appointment today?
It鈥檚 never too late to get help! However, it鈥檚 best to allow sufficient time after your appointment to follow up on the feedback you receive. Even if you don鈥檛 have much time, what you learn can help you on your next assignment.
What if the Writing Centre schedule is full?
You can add yourself to the waitlist. In our online booking system, click the link below the day you would like to schedule your appointment. Then follow the prompts to add yourself to the waitlist. Be sure to check your email to see if an appointment opens up that matches your criteria. You can also drop in at Lansdowne campus Ewing 202, where a tutor might be available on short notice.

Our services
Is feedback the same as editing and proofreading?
No. Here鈥檚 the difference:
- Feedback: Think of us as coaches. We listen to your concerns about your work, ask you questions, and make suggestions (feedback). We identify what we think works well in your assignment and what could use some work. We then share strategies you can use when you revise.
- Editing: An editor corrects problems with organization and grammar, or makes writing clearer and more concise. We are not editors, but we can help you learn to edit your own work.
- Proofreading: A proofreader finds and corrects minor errors such as typos and misspellings. We are not proofreaders, but we can help you learn to proofread your own work.
I can鈥檛 get started on my assignment. Can the Writing Centre help me?
Yes. While we won鈥檛 tell you what to say, we can help you understand the assignment guidelines and share strategies for generating ideas on the topic.
English is not my first language. Can the Writing Centre help me?
Absolutely! We all have training and experience working with multilingual learners. Besides, writing tends to be challenging for almost everyone!
Can I get help with group assignments?
Yes. We usually work one-on-one with one group member per appointment on their individual part of the assignment. Try to book an appointment at least a few days before your assignment is due. Please also let us know what specifically you would like us to focus on.
I need to get an A on this paper... Do you think it's good enough?
All grading questions and concerns should be directed to your instructor. We focus on helping you develop the core skills you need to succeed in your coursework over the long term.
My assignment is over 20 pages. Can I receive feedback on the whole paper?
Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes, so we are unable to give thorough feedback on an entire assignment of this length. Consider making appointments for different sections of a long assignment, about 10 pages maximum per session, and let us know specifically what you鈥檇 like us to focus on (e.g., thesis statement, topic sentences, etc.).
Can I get help with my resume and cover letter?
If your resume and cover letter are part of a Camosun course assignment, we can help. If your resume and cover letter are not part of a Camosun course, we will likely refer you to the Career Services department.

Can you check my work for plagiarism?

Can you check my citations for me?
While we won鈥檛 check all your citations, we can answer any specific questions you have. We鈥檒l also show you how to use citation resources so you can check the content and styling of your in-text citations and references page. We help with all citation styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago, and IEEE. You may also ask a librarian for help with citations.
What if my instructor would like proof that I received help at the Writing Centre?
We don鈥檛 provide appointment attendance verification, for reasons of both confidentiality and workload. However, you may forward to your instructor the notes that your tutor emails you after the session. Alternatively, if your tutor doesn鈥檛 provide emailed notes, you could take a screen shot of your appointment booking page to show your instructor.
Does the Writing Centre have a policy on Generative AI, such as ChatGPT?
No. Camosun instructors set the rules on what, if any, GenAI use is permitted in each course. If you鈥檙e struggling with an assignment, you may be tempted to use GenAI even if your instructor limits or prohibits its use. We strongly recommend that you follow your instructors鈥 guidelines on AI use and speak with them if you are uncertain about anything. Instructors may consider AI use to be plagiarism. 听
The Writing Centre is a safe space for you to get help with these struggles. We do not report suspected GenAI use, but we might start a conversation with you about it to help you avoid negative consequences and learn how to do the assignment yourself.
